In Lakota Sioux legend, Hanwi is the moon and her name means "Night Sun" or "Dark Sun". Hanwi was the wife of "Wi", who was the sun. As the moon spirit, Hanwi guards her people during the night, protecting them from evil spirits. One of my earlier bronzes, Dance of Sun & Moon, depicts their relationship as they pass in the sky. The following is just one of the many Native American legends concerning Sun and Moon:
Sun was in love with Moon and wanted to marry her. However, the reluctant Moon came up with an idea. She told Sun that if he gave her a gift that would fit her size, she would marry him. So mighty Sun got her the most beautiful robe ever seen, but it didn't fit. He then got her another size, and that too didn't fit... it was either too big, or too small. He just could not understand her trick. Moon is never the same size every day... she goes through different phases from the period of the full moon to the new moon. Poor Sun is still gtrying to get the robe to fit!!!
