"COUP PONIES", monument

Ed. 11

16' high

So important was the horse to the plains Indian that wealth was commonly measured in their number.  A horse raid was conducted at considerable risk; the stakes were high and the dangers were great, but one of the highest tribal honors went to the warrior who captured his enemy's horses.

"Dance Of Sun & Moon"

Ed. 11

Plains Indian legend of Sun & Moon:

Sun made a daily journey across the horizon to the West where he entered his lodge to pass the night.  Moon, his wife, also dwelt in Sun's lodge, but they would only see each other in passing each morning and evening.

"ULTIMATE COUP"

ed 30

29"h, 28"w, 26"d

With past coups adding to prestige and wealth, a warrior sought to count more coups in warfare and raiding.  The killing of an enemy was not the highest war honor among Plains Indians.  Great bravery was shown by striking an enemy with hand or coup stick.
